Sustainability at the Show

Sustainability is important to us – we are working hard to become a ZERO waste event and reduce impact on the environment.

Waste Minimisation and Landfill Diversion

Creating positive change and improving sustainability at the Show is one of our key goals.

With your help last year, and in collaboration with waste minimisation partners, Wasteless, the waste sent to landfill in 2023 was down by a whopping 66 percent!

To build on this great result, working with you and Wasteless this year, we will implement the following strategies:

• A three-bin system including General Waste (red), Mixed Recycling (yellow), and Compost (green).
• An on-site waste crew to empty bins and sort waste to remove contamination.
• Compostable packaging, along with food waste, will be composted following the event.

YOU can help us to minimise waste and divert landfill by:

• Bring reusable water bottles to fill at the Watertech Plus water refill station.
• Bring re-usable coffee cups for your caffeine fix at the Show.
• Dispose of materials and items correctly within the three-bin system.
• Be a tidy Kiwi and taking any litter with you.
• Only taking brochures, pamphlets, and other giveaways if you need them.

Horse Measuring 2026/27

We are pleased to announce that Horse Measuring is back at Barge Showgrounds for another year.

The dates for the 2026/27 season will be announced soon.

To keep up to date go to the Whangarei Horse Measuring facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/290772498039178/

Please note changes last year to helmet standards:

https://www.ras.org.nz/equestrian/health-and-safety/

Also note that Barge Showgrounds Maunu Reserve is a public area used by the community for walking dogs, children playing, athletics and equestrian events.

First Time?

If the measure is for a new certificate please get there at least 15-20 minutes before the schedule measuring appointment as there is paperwork to be filled in BEFORE the measure can take place.

Before going to the measure, PLEASE ensure that your horse is prepared correctly: feet trimmed/shod, mane trimmed at wither, presented in a bridle, relaxed, clean etc.

If needed, bring a friend or a bucket of food.

Usually measuring can fit two horses into a 5-minute slot.

If you think that you may need a bit more time due to being a borderline height or your horse needs time to settle, when booking your appointment please say you want a FULL 5 minutes.
